Korky



How does a 3 month old puppy end up on the streets and then in an overcrowded small town shelter?That is a question that we ask ourselves every day.

This is Korky’s story. It was his last day, and his future foster mom saw his photo. The photo of a very scared puppy being held up in someone’s hand and it tugged at her heart. Of course, her heart said yes, and thankfully so did ACT. 

A local volunteer picked him up and kept him for the night, to be retrieved the next day by his foster Mom.  But, by the next morning, Korky was quite lethargic and clearly needed medical attention. He got an immediate appointment and was almost completely limp as he laid on the examination table. He had areas of his fur that were hairless and oozed with a sticky, smelly discharge. His demodex mange would take over his immune system and he would become almost hairless without treatment.

His treatment was a long and expensive process with many medical visits to check on his progress and to do skin scrapings for the mite infestation.

This scared puppy was blossoming in his foster home. He was a champ, as he learned to sit quietly in the sink 3 times a week, for 10 minutes each time, as the medicated shampoo, worked at healing his tender skin.


As the months went by, the hair began to grow back and the relationship between Korky, his foster brother Casper and this foster Mom also was growing. Korky and Casper bonded as rescue brothers and were constant playmates and nap buddies.

It was a long 10 months before Korky had a clear skin scrapping and was deemed, Demodex free.
But, in those 10 months, he was certainly part of the family and there was no parting with him. He was ours!


Korky was officially adopted and is now living with his foster Mom, his brother Casper, poodle sister Coco and many temporary foster brothers and sisters. We can not imagine not having this wonderful boy in our home. Thank you ACT for saving Korky’s life and giving him the medical treatment that he so desperately needed.     It's been wonderful to see Korky blossom like he has. He's such a sweet, loving boy.
